Does anybody have any good tips for making the bases look really good? I glued some modeling sand to mine, but some of the larger ones like Krox and Carno could use a little something extra. Any ideas?
 
My simple, quick set up is:
After everything on your model is dry...
1. Paint the base Graveyard Earth.
2. Use Elmer's glue and spread it over the top, dip it in the modelling sand.
3. After the sand is dried on, put spots all over the base and pinch some Glade Grass and pat it onto all of the spots. This makes it look like the grass is standing up.
 
Cool. Do you put the sand on before or after you basecoat the model? I did all mine before.
 
As an addition to what was already mentioned, I like to add a layer of spray on matt varnish. This extra layer will give the grass (or pebbles, or whatever) more strength and ensure that bits of flock/gravel dont come off.
 
Good idea! I've actually noticed already that there's lots of little bits of sand everywhere now. Thanks for the tip!
 
Plus any spare bodies from a common foe (Skaven always looks good) chewed up with a modeling knife and painted suitably bashed and torn always catches the eye. just my .02
 
Haha, sweet idea, man! :smug: I'll have to see if I can find some bits of Skaven for my Carno to chew on....
 
My Ogre army has bits of other guys all over with blood all around. If you mix blood red with modeling sand, it looks like chunks. Also, for the Carnosaur, I saw someone put water effects around the mouth, looked like drool. Awesome effect.

I need to get some spray on varnish. My sand is all over my box/battlemat.

I have absolutley no idea how to do that, however. o_O
 
Green stuff painted right might do the trick...in fact, now that I think about it, you might get glue to do that if under the right circumstance. Best of luck. Oh, and for my models, (especially important ones) I like to decorate with skulls and broken pieces of equipment. If the base allows, sometimes I'll manage an entire model from an army I hate (High Elves!) and have him being ripped in half or something to that effect...
 
Where do you get skulls from I have a hard time finding them.
 
could always ask a VC player friend to see if he has any left over skeleton heads (which he should i bet)
 
I had a friend who stopped playing TK and gave his army to me, so I kinda sliced & diced his skeletons for bits.
 
Right on, well I'm playing Vampire Counts now also so I may be able to steal bits from that when I get a new box.
 
a friend of mine started VC and he began making models with the extra bits as if they were crawling up from the ground
 
On the topic of Skeloton bits. Made a dead skeloton Guard army. They look awsome. Though the powerfist and the guy smocking is pretty funny 2.

Also Mutant skelotons. ( Skeleton of a deformed guy) Look pretty cool.
 
Right on I'm curently converting left over skull pass dwarves from my dwarf army into grave guards, they're looking cool
