7th Ed. Are you excited about 8th Ed?

I was wondering what the overall attitude of the players was toward the new edition coming up.

1. Are you excited, neutral, disappointed? Why do you feel this way?

2. Do you think the GAME (as a set of rules) in general will be better/worse/same? (Why)

3. 8th Edition has a new “feel” about it. What do you think GW is attempting to do in 8th Ed. Versus what it has done in previous editions. (6th & 7th)

4. From 6th Ed to 7th Edition the overall excitement about Warhammer Fantasy seems to have waned a bit. (Unbalanced killer armies, poor rules etc.) Do you think Games Workshop had this in the forefront when redesigning the edition?

This is not about rules discussion, army discussion so lets not digress. There are tons of threads about those topics. Talk about the Game in general.

well as im palying 7ed only few months so im not disapointed in 7 ed, so i would like it to stay. in other words i dislike 8ed. IMHO to much randomness, not alot of intelegents needed (imho, others say diferently, but i will stick to my opinions as im stuborn with it), alot of things like march bloking, hiding in terrain, redirecting charges were taken away what was a big thing in tactical look that you needed to play good to be sucsesfull.
now if you fail charge what the hec enemy will charge you and there wont be any diference becouse you still fight in I order, and that +1CR is nothing when kills go from 5-6 to 12-15. newbies had a chance to win againts good general in 7 ed, but in 8 ed those odds are sky high.
the biggest disapointment in GW is that they only think about $, offcourse thats normal but you could make the game more interesting. the miscast table (loss control table) is dull only 5 variants, and they allmost not differ. why didint they add something like "turn in to a frog" "portal tu future you come back to game after X turns" "legs disabled, mage cant walk" "eyes got blasted, cant cast spell wich requerse lne of sight" "bad eye sight, mage has to cast one spell againts hes army (random spell with random dices rolled)" "teleports, scater dice where he goes, if out of table than dead" and it took me only few minutes to think of that, why it was so hard for Gw? those miscast would be more interesting than always lose d6 power dice, huge template, and your not a wizard any more.
the other thing i dont like is cheap horde unit can kill of a smaller elite army (for the same points), but they cant kill a single charecter.

IMHO they even should not realese 8ed becose there are army wich dont even have a 7 ed book!!!hows that spit on costumers?

Hilarious. I have one thing to say: Chaos daemons vs Ogre kingdoms in 8th. Guess who won?
In 8th Ogres have gotten better. Trust me, they have. They would now have a fair chance of winning against the Chaos daemons.

It's actually heavy armour.
Chaos/full plate armour=4+
Heavy armour=5+

I myself am positive towards 8th ed. It's opening my eyes towards new units, combos and ways to play. Here's hoping half of them work.
Magic isn't as dominant, which I like since I can now stock up on more Scar-vets (or even skink chiefs!) instead of my Old blood, scar-vet and scroll caddy priests to defend myself against the magic heavy lists around here.

Extremely pumped about it, can't wait to get all the FAQs and start putting together how the new game will work. The game itself seems like it will be getting bloodier with more casualties from combat and shooting. We'll see how it all comes together but at this point it looks pretty good.

Yeah I am quite looking forward to it. Some aspects I don't like, but as usual I will get used to them and be fine with it. Very much looking forward to getting my hands on the BRB, which I preordered. The biggest problem is going to be deciding which of my armies I want to focus on first..

Optimistic trepidation is where I'm at right now. I don't like the changes that base even more of the game's outcome on random dice rolls; I do like the % system and the swing towards bigger units that step up to fight as others are cut down.

It looks like this is going to be a lot of fun for the time being, but the more fantasy assimilates aspects of the 40K rule set, the worse off I think we'll be.

Im excited about it, all the new changes are for the best IMO. I think the game will be far more balanced now and will flow alot smoother. It also put a stop to all the really lame builds that were popping up everywhere like the magic heavy Tzeentch daemons or the dark elf hydra/assassin spam, etc.

Some great points of view being posted. Here are my thoughts...

Actually I am excited about this edition. There were many things wrong with the rules in 7th Ed. IMO and it appears (without studying the rule book, just spending some time looking at it and listening to HammerCast) they are trying to address many issues.

2. I am pessimistically optimistic that these rules will make for a more enjoyable game overall.

My views on Warhammer are more from a war gamer who loves the hobby aspect of the game. My first love is the tactical/strategic aspect of Warhammer then the modeling/painting. I think Core units should make the core of your army and despise Herohammer, Ruleshammer and Gimmickhammer. I also think that “if the rule doesn’t make sense, common sense must rule” and “if it is not fun for all...it just ain’t fun” attitude you see outside of the tournaments is the way the game should be played.

I want a challenging tactical wargame not a simplistic skirmish game. I want a game where every army (even the Ogre Kingdoms) have the same chance to win, and winning is therefore accomplished by tactical and smart game play. Not your “Hell Pit Abomination/ Sun Dragon/ Bloodthurster/ 22 powerdice” ran over the enemy army while the rest of the army watched.

I believe that the core rules in 8th Ed. have began to address the issues seen in prior editions. The horde rule will allow S3 T3 units to compete in combat vs S4 T4 A2 elite units. Shooting in two ranks will bring shooting into a more viable phase of the game. The magic can be absolutely brutal but very limited. So, I think this game will be more enjoyable for ALL players of all armies then 7th Edition was.

3. 8th Ed has a new “feel” and it seems there is a new attitude in GW.
In prior editions there was NO attempt to make a balanced game. Each army was independently made in its own little microcosm. I do NOT believe the army book authors set down and tried to “break” their lists like tournament players do. Each author would simply put in the book what he thought would be “fun/cool/fluffy or always wanted” and this allowed the creation of the “super” army (IE: VC/DoC) and lead to the power creep seen over the last decade.

It “feels” that GW is now aware of the unbalance and player reaction to the DoC/VC etc. and (hopefully) going to actually play test their armies/rules (at least a little). I think this change in attitude is visible in the fact they are writing addenda on ALL the armies prior to the release of 8th and postponed the release of some army books. This is something unheard of in prior editions. With prior game editions, they simply put out rules or books (6th Dwarf) when scheduled and let the older army books suffer for 5 years (Bretts) though a new rules system until the army book cycle got around to them.

4. A decline in WHFB
At least in my area, their has been a decline in the number of Fantasy Players. While I do not attribute this to the game being too difficult (WHFB seems to be written for Tweens) as much as the unbalanced game play. I do think GW who is “bottom line minded”, and ALL businesses HAVE TO BE, has noticed the decline in players. Any fool reading the forums can determine that the WHFB community as a whole is not happy with the one or two Super Armies each edition, and I believe GW does read the forums. So I do believe GW will try to fix/balance the game as much as possible (hence .pdf on all armies). I do NOT believe it can be 100% balanced with as many armies as there are available. But it can be much, much better.

It seems that GW is trying to balance the elite/balanced/horde/finesse army concept into a playable game system in 8th Edition. Combat, I believe will still dominate (as it should) but the empire spearmen/swordsmen in horde formation can now fight WoC or Spear/Saurus and not be crushed by their 25 S4/T4 attacks. Shooting has doubled in power, magic has the potential to be devastating if unreliable and movement is now longer (no more micro-move hammer) and a key role in winning will be how you maneuver your army.

With these changed in 8th Edition, I hope the hobby grows and brings in new players because I really do enjoy playing. So here is to 8th Edition! May it bring balance back into the (Force) errr Warhammer World!

I'm very excited about 8th ed. My gaming group started with WFB a few years ago, but the slow-moving gameplay and imbalance between armies made us move to 40k. Now, the problem seems to have reversed itself with 40k armies being in a weird state (some like Necrons or GKs are near unplayable while Space Wolves rule the boards...).

What we're looking forward to is a more dynamic gameplay and a focus on blocks of troops. The first one for obvious reasons. The second one is mainly because blocs of troops with support from special/rare/heroes makes more "sense" if such a thing applies to wargaming. It also makes for a good show. When I played LM 7 years ago, I had minimal saurus blocs while a jaguar OB and Sallies would try and slaughter the opponent's heroes/troops. Now, I'm eager to have biggish (6x4, 5x5) blocks of saurus, block of Kroxies (3x2), a few sallies, a few Skinks, a Stegadon and a slaan. The feeling of it will be, I'm pretty sure, more "cinematic" that it used to be!

I think 8th asks more of players than 7th ever did. In 7th you could control all the variables, you could control the number of power dice and dispel dice you were bringing, you could control charge range, you could limit your opponents shooting by sticking a line of skinks infront of a far larger Oldblood on a carno and go "Haha! you cannot shoot him as these skinks CLEARLY block line of sight".
With that said, all 7th ever asked of you was to be able to write a strong list and then just about be able to play with it in order to win, hence the dominance of deamons which were by far the easiest army to write a powerful list for, the same as DElves. None of the armies (besides maybe OKs lol) couldn't be cheesy or overpowered under 7th but it was easier to manage with some than others.

8th on the other hand takes this control out of the hands of the players. Now you can have a tough as nails list but if you roll low for dice generate or charge distances then you stand to lose that edge.

No longer will you see a HElf hero mounted on a dragon in a 1000 point list. 8th is the edition of the infantry, not the hero and as such will require more strategy to outmanouver and out play your enemy.

Time to learn to accept change people because it's here.
