8th Ed. Anyone having any luck using Cold One Cav?

I have 15 of them siting in my case and would like to break them out because they are such cool models. I had an idea for a unit of 15 with a mounted Old-Blood or Scar Vet with the Crown of Command attached. Seems to me they always break from combat if you run them into anything other than small, peripheral junk, and for the points they just seem like they should be doing so much more. Thought with the Crown they might stick around a little longer.

Is anyone using these guys effectively against blocks and what kind of build are you using?

I'm not using them against blocks but I use them against monsters and other flanking units and they have been the star players in my last several games. I have them set up with a durable scarvet, (great combo is shield, glittering scales and dawn stone for a 1+ re-rollable AS against enemies that frequently have to hit on a 6 or 5 at worst, I myself give him a halberd instead of the shield so he is 2+ re-rollable but is also S6). I give them the banner of eternal flame so I can kill off regen/flammable monsters.

The thing about cavalry this edition is to not use them as the main force but as they periferies, destroying the supporting units etc.

I used a unit of 6 or 7 (with full command) a couple of weeks ago against wariors of chaos,
they took out a couple of weaker units of hounds and eventual got
into a battle with two smaller units of chaos wariors with a special character in one of them,
(the prety chaos guy) and they actualy managed to survive 2 rounds against them,
ultimately fighting down to the last guy who ran away, eventualy through combined arms
only theeir special character was left. Also I had no magic helping them out in this game.

How does that give you 1+ armour save. My thoought is that is should combine to 2+. Am I missing something?

If you are not using a shield (you use a halberd) this shouldnt be a 1+ save.

Well, I said I gave him the halberd for a 2+ re-rollable in favor of higher strength so I guess I implied that he had a shield.
I can see where the confusion would have come in so I'll edit the post for clarity

Sory, that is my bad for not reading your post more carefully. Would you say that 1+ is too much and that you dont need it? I have barely ever used the mounted scar-vet so I have litle experience on what to use on him.

Eh, you re-read it after I edited it so its still my bad.

The 1+ re-roll is very handy when you come across Sword Masters/White Lions or Halberd/Great Weapon Warriors of Chaos. It means that at worst you have a 4+(against White Lions and GW WOC) re-roll which is very nice in a challenge, but the S6 means that the same GW WOC will have NO armour save meaning that you've just killed the champ and got one or two over kill points, plus wounding Treemen/Hydras on 4's is nothing to sneeze at (I think its four no books at this point in time).

Example, this last thursday I played High Elfs, my unit of 7 COC and Scar Vet ate three white lion chariots, a unit of fifteen archers and 5 SMs plus the Blade Lord in a challenge (the game ended then, I didn't expect them to survive much longer as the SM had a nasty nasty Prince in there as well)

I think the biggest "problem" with cavalry is that it doesn't fit too well with life magic especially if you play bunker style you would rather buy stegadons, infantry or kroxigors.

But in a more loose playstyle I've had success running 2 units of 5 cavalry with musicians on the flanks, they are pretty cheap, can beat most support units and hit pretty hard if combo charging with your other units.

Also they give look out sir rolls to your mounted scarvets and oldbloods which I still think is some of the best buys in the book, if you bring several of those it might also be a good idea to bump the cavalry up to 6-7 models to get extra look out sir rolls.

I've had lots of success with them against my friend's Daemons of Chaos army. 1st game I used them, they took two turns of flamers shooting instead of my Saurus block. In their second game, they took one turn of flamers shooting before charging some Fiends of Slaanesh that were tied up in combat with a Stegadon.

For some people, it might now seem like a lot of success, but I've found that my opponents usually overworry about my SCoC, which allows me to get more dangerous units in combat unscathed.

i use 12 COC and 3 scar vets two with weapons that give +2A (one form R the other from lizard weapons) and the third one with heavy armour that gives 4+ ward and great weapon. totaly the unit is 15 lizards. with them i use slann with light lore. and this unit just makes wonders, it kills anything in its way!

Walgis, No offence but I would be suprised if a 800+ poin unit not kill some thing in it's way.

I on the other hand, have not had any good experiance with them, If they were moved to Core I would probably use them more often, but other wise, I'll have to try the 5 on flank. I do LOVE my model's, the paint job I managed to pul off is amazing, So I would trully love to feild them a little more often.
