8th Ed. 9 Attack Oldblood!

Hey all,

I just wanted to put a pretty awesome combo out there

Saurus Oldblood

Light Armour
The Maiming Shield
Sword of Bloodshed
Carnosaur

Total: 455pts


This gives you a general(and mount) that could take out a small enemy unit in a turn!

*5 when frenzied.

I really like this combo, and instead of a Carnosaur, you could take a Cold One. What are your guys thoughts on this, and please do post your favourite character combos!

9 S5 attacks doesn't really do it for me tbh. That's 235 points... 10 Temple Guard only cost 160 points and can put out 16 S5 attacks.

there are allready topics about scar vets and olblood builds and posting full stat lines is illegal in most countries.... otehr than that... yeah, great combo if you have the points to field it

Stat lines are ok these days since they are on the GW website anyway.. Its points values that can't be posted. I'll edit them out.

Anyway, yeah similar combos have been posted since the 7th ed book first came out with the LM sword that gives extra attacks, I believe it is a different points value to the one in the BRB as well so worth making sure you grab the cheapest.

It is a good combo for taking out a lot of infantry, not so great against characters though.

Generally sites err on the side of caution, much better to avoid even a chance of GW doing anything. However, I think GW would instantly lose a LOT of customers if they tried to kick up a fuss about us having content that they make freely available online too, as far as I am concerned its not really an issue.

But lets get this thread back on topic.

Be careful, the points total you have to use is the one from the army book if there is a difference. Unfortunately, you cannot pick.

Well, the maiming shield is ONLY in the Lizardmen rulebook and the Sword of Bloodshed is ONLY in the Battle Rule Book so there shouldn't be any problems with looking at points

As I like the combo I would much rather have him on foot in a unit. That was a 16 s5 attack Temple Guard unit would now become a 23 strength 5 combat unit.. A little more formidable..

And you just toss Light Armor onto the Lord and he has t5 with a 2+ AS which is a little better than the t4 4+ AS of the Temple Guard

I have thought about this combination a few times but honestly, once your opponent finds out you have 9 Str 5 Attacks only protected by a unit and an Armor Save I feel he is going to do what it takes to find guys that will take away the protection of a high save and Toughness.. I Prefer my Lords to have protection rather than lots and lots of attacks. Like try Armor of Destiny with the +2 Attack Sword and give him a shield, its still 7 attacks at Str 5 with a 1+ AS and a 4+ Ward Save. Or Ogre Blade with 5 Str 7 attacks with the same saves..

I like your idea And if you can find a way to keep him safe then by all means

the Glittering scales is a nice light armor with -1 to hit in CC. however, you couldn't use the maiming shield with it. I use the scales, the sword of hornet and the dawnstone with my oldblood. so far with success.

Hey guys,

Sorry about posting the points values, I was totally unaware that it was illegal :-/

I designed this guy with the hope that he would go around taking out infantry, not so much going up against enemy characters, he's more adept at chopping up normal rank and file models. The Carnosaur is also good at this, thanks to his 4(or 5 when Frenzied) Attacks, at Strength 7, and also D6 Thunderstomp Attacks. Against a normal unit, they both could potentially cause 20 casualties, and against multi-wound models(Minotaurs, Ogres, Trolls etc), the Carnosaur's Multiple Wounds(D3) really comes into play. They could also accompany a unit of Cold One Cavalry for combat bonuses and to prevent enemy missiles and certain magic picking him out.

Elmquasmash, those two combos are awesome too, and I have considered them to a great extent, but this guy was designed for causing total carnage, too reckless to really care about his own personal safety. Besides, once he's in combat, I trust his T5 and 1+ AS will keep him alive. As to magical attacks coming his way, I trust my tooled-up Slann to dispel it all

i'm not gonna discuss the viability of the COC but you can not join units with characters mounted on monsters so he's gonna be pretty vulnerable

Yes I know, thats not quite what I meant. Should have worded it better. There are some new common magic items that do exactly the same as book specific ones but cost different points. I got mixed up between sword of bloodshed and sword of strife though, so doesn't matter here.

But look at our scimitar of the sun now, it gives 2 extra attacks. Compare it to sword of strife in the BRB that also gives 2 extra attacks but is 10 points cheaper than the scimitar, and the scimitar is essentially made redundant.

For an Oldblood, I like: Sword of Bloodshed, mundane shield, 5+ ward heavy armour from the Rulebook and one of the 5pt potions or the Ironcurse Icon.

So a 1+ save, 5+ ward and only 1 less attack... plus something tricksy (+3 Initiative on an oldblood? or an extra attack on the charge and ItP? How about a 6+ cannonball ward for your Carno?)

i only bring the carnosaur if i'm going to use the blade of realities, true you have 9 attacks plus the 4 from the carnosaur, but if you end up overruning into a horde, you're pretty much in trouble. and remember, anything can kill anything now in this edition. all it takes is 40 attacks from a horde and with lucky rolls, 10 rolls of 6 to wound would probably kill you beacuse i highly doubt you could save from all those wounds.
i like to use the sword of bloodshed with LA and SH plus dragonhelm only for my oldblood on foot and put him in a unit of saurus and now he's really meant for cutting up infantry, and also is still a great match up against other characters. makes him a 1+AS and 2+WS against flaming for those lore of fire users out there and on top of that, he's dishing out 8 attacks at S5.

well 40 attacks is quite rare. the carnosaur has a 50x50 monster base (i think) so thats 4 20x20 models (wich are the most hordes) in base contact. 4x3=12 attacks. add spears and high elves to that and thats 20 attacks hitting on 4's with rerolls and then 6's, that means... 2.5 wounds before saves, with LA, Shield and carnosaur the oldblood has a 1+ save so thats around 0.4 wounds if my math is correct.

now you could drop the carnosaur, get a +2 attack sword and get a slann with 1 discipline beside him in a 2k point game and you can even heal those wounds (not to mention only 3 models in base to base)

Unfortunately, you can't have 2 magic armours, so the Enchanted shield would have to go, which isn't too bad as your save maxes out at 1+ in the new rules.

Its a good setup, but I think I prefer the 4+ward and no stupidity heavy armour from the New BRB. Also, with the points you's save on the shield and talisman you could take a better weapon, like the +2strength or +2 Attack sword...
