8th Ed. 750 Points friendly

Hi everyone, I am new here to the forum as well as to WFB. My play group has been playing 40K for a couple of years and now we have decided to start up with Fantasy as well. I have inherited my friends old lizardmen army which includes 1 Slann, 16 Saurus, 2 Stegadons, 1 salamander, 1 Scarvet, 2 skink priests, 4 teradons, 10 Chamo Skinks, 6 krox, and about 50 skirmishers. I am trying to put together my first army list and our group is playing at 750 points right now. Here is what I have come up with so far:

Skink Priest, lvl. 2, Plaque of Tepok 115

10 Skirmishers 70

24 Saurus (running 6x4), Mus, Std 282

10 Chamo Skinks (or maybe 2 units of 5) 120

1 Salamander, extra handler 80

1 Salamander, extra handler 80

Total: 747


I figure I would put the priest in with the skirmishers and just try to out maneuver/out shoot the opponent while my saurus slowly make their way up the board. Hopefully the skinks and Sallies can thin the opposition down that a 24 strong block of saurus wont have too much trouble moping up. Thanks in advance!

Now that is one very good list. I think you wouldn't do badly if you used it in a tournament. As you said, split the chamo skinks into two units of 5 for increased flexibilty. I think that although Saurus are tough nuts, you should consider that you may get flanked. The Salamanders should be used really offensively both to flame as well as to redirect enemy charges so that your Saurus can counter-charge. Perhaps consider running your priest alone if the enemy has no scouts, long ranged shooting, or fast units.

I will, however, point out that the skink priest does not have the skirmish special rule which would mean if you planned on putting him with the skirmishers you'd force the skinks to rank up and lose their benefits. It would be better, in my opinion, to reinvest those points into regular skinks. They are less points, have the same movement characteristic, and have the benefit of shield and hand weapon. You can still throw javelins at an 8" range and they still have jungle poisons.

I will also add this, ranks are vastly important in 8th edition. Having superior ranks to your enemy can make all the difference in a game. For that reason I would suggest running the Saurus Warriors 5x5 with the last rank having 4. This gives you 4 potential wounds in which to hold your +3 additional rank bonus and makes it easier to widdle down swarm armies and force them to lose steadfast, all at the cost of only 3 CC attacks.. a worthy trade off IMHO.

A character model that joins a unit of Skirmishers gains the Skirmisher special rule as long as he stays with that unit. A character on a mount cannot join a unit of Skirmishers.

But, you cannot then use the skinks aggressively. I did this in an 800 points game, and got a flank charge with Saurus. The skinks all died, 70 points to my opponent, but I managed to get 190 points back.

And yes, ranks are very important in the 8th edition because of Steadfast.

Well said and well spotted on skirmish. My bad for poor advice on that front. Though yes, skink skirmishers shine as harassers and redirectors because even if my come miracle they caught on a flee reaction you just shrug at the loss of less than 100 points of models. Putting a nice juicy priest in there, however, makes things a little more complex. Actually.. as far as skink priest goes I generally follow three different set ups:

1: Engine of the Gods.. not viable in so few points

2: Small Saurus Bunker: just plop him in a unit of 10-15 saurus warriors and stay back a little to rain doom from relative safety.

3: Medium Skink Bunker: The faster, less safe, version of the Saurus Bunker.. you just place about twice as many bodies in the bunker with half to protection.. trust that this does actually make sense, especially if facing opponents that like lore of death or shadows (initiative tests not so bad on init 4)
