8th Ed. 2000pts Oldblood Army

Hi guys, its been a while since I've played a game, and I was thinking of a fun but semi-serious list with a solo oldblood. Well, here goes:

Saurus Oldblood: Glittering Scales, Aura of Quetzl, Crown of Command, Cold One, Great Weapon 287pts

Scar-Veteran: Battle Standard, Banner of Eternal Flame, Cold One, Light Armour, Shield, Spear 152pts

Scar-Veteran (General): Armour of Fortune, Great Weapon 126pts

Skink Priest: Dispel Scroll 90pts

29 Saurus Warriors: Spears, Full Command 378pts

20 Saurus Warriors: Standard, Musician 238pts

10 Skink Skirmishers 70pts

10 Skink Skirmishers 70pts

5 Cold One Cavalry: Standard, Musician 205pts

6 Chameleon Skinks 72pts

Stegadon 235pts

Salamander Hunting Pack: 3 Skink Handlers 75pts

That's the list. Any critiquing would be great.

I would drop some of the 29 Saurus to try and get another salamander in their. I have found paired salamander to be 100x more effective than a salamander by itself.

I'm assuming that the old blood and the bsb are going in the cold one unit and that the old blood will be taking all the challenges. You may want to think about switching the eternal flame banner to the actual cold one unit and adding something to make the bsb more killy. That unit needs to dish out tons of wounds. Maybe a +attack weapon?

Overall I think its very solid the way it is and it will definitely cause some damage. I run something similar in 1500 point games.

Well I was actually thinking of running the oldblood solo on a flank to tie it up. He's super hard to hit and has a 1+ AS. I was going for a large unit of saurus, but if i drop that extra 9 I can definitely fit in another sally. I haven't used CoC in this edition, but I'll definitely beef it up a bit.

There are a few issues i see with this list.

Not enough units i feel, or anything that will demolish your opponent.
Am I to assume that you'll wither him down all game than go for cc?

I'm with Cyanhawk for dropping some saurus for an extra salamander,

The list looks solid i could even somewhat pick out how it would be placed.
aia just don't see you hitting close combat with anything but the CoC, which in the games i used them in, generally got redirected or defeated one unit and then tried to catch up with the rest of the game.
I have yet to see that unit DEMOLISH a unit on its own. but seeing as there are two scar veterans maybe.

I just don't see any hammers.

What would be some good hammer units to include? Is 2 units of saurus too many for my anvil? I don't like the look of skrox units, the rank and file skinks seem way too squishy to be anywhere near combat, but kroxigors on their own isn't quite enough to win combat res.

I actually think you have hammers in the stegadon, CoC and salamanders can be surprisingly effective if put into a flank. The real problem is none of your hammers will break ranks. The saurus can definitely be anvils. Its just like I said you need to use the CoC to absolutely slaughter units when they finally get into combat. That unit needs to put down 10+ wounds per combat, which is why I would keep the oldblood in them with their lower model count.

The oldblood on his own is a bad idea for at least the beginning of the game. There are lots of things that can blast him when he is on his own and don't care about armor saves or being hard to hit in CC. Once you get him close enough if you feel you need to charge him out at something go for it, but keep him protected on the way in. I would hate to see one random cannon shot or bolt thrower or crazy spell take him out.

Ok, that makes sense: sheltering the oldblood, making the CoC hit like a brick, but would it be too much of a points sink into that unit to be worth it? I hate the all eggs in one basket scenario. Would making the CoC unit bigger be a good idea?

CoC is expensive. You cant get around that. they also do have toughness 4 and a 2+ save so they are pretty tough to take down. I usually only run them in larger point games and I take 8 and put two saurus characters in the unit. That negates ranks in the flank and hits harder than people think.

Most armies have a "all your eggs in one basket" type unit in their army. Lizardmen its usually a CoC bus or a block of templeguard. Skaven have the plague monks with furnace. Chaos has chosen. etc etc. Its all about leading their all in unit around by its nose with your junk units and having your all in unit wreak havoc.

Well Superskink3000 and Cyanhawk both make good points.

If the CoC will be your hammer make sure it dishes out the pain.
Putting the Oldblood and the Scar-Vet will be good for boosting its strength, but if you don't outnumber you won't break the unit, so it most likely will be grinded to the floor after with a flank charge from your opponent.

May i suggest finding place for another stegadon/ ancient stegadon?

As well as maybe dropping the chameleon skins for regular as you might not even use the scout rule.
