8th Ed. 1k Tourny list, allied with Ogres

So this is gonna be a 2v2 Tournament, and my partner plays Ogres. Each player brings 1k points, normal rules apply so I can't fit a Slann in, which is gonna be very disappointing. We talked a bit about what we are thinking of doing, and it sounds like he is going to bring a super unit of Ogre Ironguts with a Tyrant and a Butcher, and thats it. So it looks like I'm going to bring the ranged and accessory units. Here's what I'm thinking:

Burning Blade of Chotec, Armor of Destiny, Bane Head

Skink Priest lvl 2
Cube of Darkness

Salamander
Extra Handler

Salamander
Extra handler

6 x Chameleon Skinks

6 x Chameleon Skinks

19 x Saurus Warriors
Full Command, Hand Weapon + Shield

12 x Skink Skirmishers
Blowpipe

That puts me at 997 points.

What does anyone think of it? I'll be War Machine/Wizard hunting with the Chameleons, sizzling large blocks of infantry with the Sallies, and hopefully flanking with the Saurus. I'm not sure if thats how I want to build the Oldblood, I'd love some help with that if anyone has any suggestions.

as the ogres will provide CC hitting power, I would drop the scar veteran and bring more skinks instead plus make the saurus unit a bit larger. you also want some more lasting dispel power (purple sun will be the death of both: ogres and lizards). I would drop the cube and take diadem of power (which will limit your casting, but that should be OK, as you will have enough units to do the killing). if you don't want to do that, though, I would still rather take a dispel scroll over the cube (you save points and the cube's additional effect isn't that good).

I'm going to have to disagree with you here. The 15 extra points for the cube is well worth it if you shut someones magic phase down entirely or get rid of really annoying RIP spells.

I'm going to have to disagree with you here. The 15 extra points for the cube is well worth it if you shut someones magic phase down entirely or get rid of really annoying RIP spells.

IMO it would be so, if that effect was granted, not on a 4+ roll of a D6

I was thinking of trying to get another unit of Skink Skirmishers in there, but I feel like i really want that Old blood because I know there will be at least 1 or 2 Dark Elf players that will surely bring War Hydras, and Burning Blade of Chotec is so sexual against them. I thought about dropping the Bane Head on the Oldblood to add a Potion of Strength for extra Hydra chopping for one turn, and I'm not sure what the definition of "character" is. Is my Oldblood a character? Would an Ogre Tyrant be a character? Just something I'm confused on there.

Anything out of the Lord and Hero choices is a character. Ogre Tyrant, Saurus Oldblood, Dark Elf Sorceress are all characters. War Hydra is not, nor is a Gorger, and unit champions don't count either.

I'm not sure about the Dark Elf Assassin though. It doesn't count toward their Hero allowance, but it has all the basic attributes of a hero otherwise. Maybe someone can clear this up.

Army builder has assassins show up as core, even though they don't count towards core allowance. The Bane Head just seems too good for 15 points to pass up on a good hero-killer/challenge guy on my Oldblood, especially since it will be useful against most armies. Does that Oldblood look like a decent build to you guys?

If he's keeping the bane-head for character killing, then i'd re-think his weapon; too many characters have easy access to cheap 2+ ward saves vs flaming attacks, and your oldblood's killing power will be reduced significantly.

I'd personally look to grab a halberd or something a bit cheaper and use the spare points for an upgrade to armour of destiny (or w/e the 4+ ward armour is called) or shove them somewhere else (maybe grab yourself the dragonbane gem, it's cheap enough to be taken in most lists just on the off-chance you come up against a unit with the eternal flame banner or a bright wizard etc.).

IMO it would be so, if that effect was granted, not on a 4+ roll of a D6

If it was granted it would be at least a 60 point item, shutting down the magic phase in an important turn is HUGE.

I thought about taking him with the Trickster's Shard, Burning Blade, Armor of Destiny, Dawnstone, and Shield. That would give him a reroll-able 1+ armor save and a 4+ ward save. It would also give him -4 to enemy's armor save, no regen saves, and force the opponent to reroll ward saves.

Doing all this would only change my Skink skirmisher block from 12 to 10. Mostly I'm relying on his Ogre block to smash things to bits while I pepper everything and hunt the shooty stuff. My Oldblood I would try to run in and get him into challenges with enemy heroes.

Some people do (some talismans for other armies aren't amazing, and it's cheap but effective), others take the Dragonhelm (same effect as the dragonbane and increases your AS for only a few points more), but any character with either of them means your killy lord has basically gone to waste. You might be as hard as nails, but if you can't do any damage, you'll get chipped away at.

Unfortunately, your loadout is 10pts over an Oldblood's magical item allowance (assuming you mean The Other Trickster's Shard), you'll need to shave something (I still think the burning blade should go, but it's up to you) if you want him. Bear in mind he's going to be costing 250pts or less, so he needs to be cost effective.

Yeah I messed up, meant to say Armor of Fortune with the 5+ ward. I think dropping the BBoC for a Great Weapon would be a good swap. I would keep same -4 AS and be wounding easier, and fire resist wouldn't destroy me. I would also go to ASL and lose the benefit of dominating regen saves. Also saves me 12 points in the long run.

If I put the Oldblood on a Cold One, can he still go in the unit of saurus? I thought I read of people doing that, but I wanted to check. Also, he can charge separately from the unit if he wants, correct?

He can still go with the saurus, he just doesn't get a 'Look Out Sir' roll because he is a cavalry model and they are infantry. He can charge out of the unit, but his unit cannot declare a charge of it's own on the turn he rushes out (page 101, second paragraph). They can then move normally in the remaining moves afterwords.
