8th Ed. 1500pt list - advice needed

Hi all, I am very new to Lizardmen, I have been playing WHFB now for 18 months (With Skaven) and have always considered Lizards as my secondary choice. With the comming of the new book, I figured now would be a good time to start.

I have purchased a 1500pt list off Ebay and have yet to try it out. However, this is only the beggining and I'd love to know what you guys/gals would suggest as the next models to buy. I do play larger games although at my local club 1500pts is the standard limit (Due to time limitations).

1 x Saurus Oldblood
1 x Skink Priest
2 x Skink Chief

16 x Saurus Warriors
14 x Skinks (With 1 Kroxigor)
12 x Skink Skirmishers

1 x Ancient Stegadon
1 x Salamander Pack

My initial thoughts are that it's a nice set up, however I am generally keen on having good magic because our local meta tends to be very magic heavy. I'd like suggestions on which school to take with the priest and how best to play tactically. Also as I said earlier; I am looking to buy new models and have thought that a Slann mage is needed, what else would you suggest I do with this list?

What I think might be good purchases:

Some more Saurus warriors. 16 isn't going to be enough.
If you use your skinks as skirmishers, you can have 2 units of 10 (1 with blowpipes 1 with javelin/shield). Which usually is enough. More skinks are never bad though. Focus on the other stuff first.

Some chameleons (converted?) and/or terradons to support your army would be great as well.

As for characters; If you want magic heavy then a 2nd priest isn't all that strange. A Scar-Vet BSB (on a cold one) is also a very solid character.

You have;
a small unit of Saurus.
2 units of skinks
1 ancient stegadon
1 salamander

for your units so far. That is a good start, but you need some more.

My advice: first go with the units, then go for the characters. I've started with skinks, saurus and a salamander. And had that for a year! Expanding faster than I did is also a good idea

As for the lore of magic: I think beasts is very good. Wyssan's wildform is just awesome on the Saurus.

As for tactics;
Lizardmen need to work together to be succesfull. Use your skinks to set up charges, redirect and bait the enemy. Hunt down fast cav, big monsters and war machines. Any unit that has skinks (Terradons, salamanders, chameleons) will be able to support your army.
The Saurus will do the heavy lifting, they get into combat and grind away. They are pretty consistent too. Ld8 Cold-blooded and loads of attacks is simply powerfull.
The big monsters make the big swing, they can really change the outcome of a combat and take the fight to a whole new level. But remember: dodging cannonballs is hard!

That's a short rundown of the army (very short...) but you might want to read up on tactics in the tactics forum. Read some discussions and battle reports, and then try it yourself!

If your metha is magic heavy you could go for the slann.. altho at 1500 pts you don't really have any means of defending him effectively with the models you have now.. you coud us run him with higher state.. but that would mean he lacks some punch..

If i was you the easiest and cheapest way of getting a playable army would be to have 2 skink priests running about with a scroll and a cube.. this gives you a respectable magic defence even against a lvl4 wizard. buy some more core.. more saurus and skinks never fail to dissapoint. at 1500 pts i reccomend a singels block of 30 saurus with spears.. and 11 skinksskirmishers plus maybe even some cheap cohords with a musician for redirecting and chipping at the enemy.

salamanders are still a verry respectable and fairly cheap rare choise at 1500 pts. if your metha doesn't have a lot of cannons you could get some monsters altho that might get expensive verry fast.. both in mony and in points at 1500 big ones..

1. saurus warriors 1 box

2. another salamander

3. dino's peferrably the terradon kit

4. slann + TG (big buy)
