8th Ed. 1500 vs empire

I play against a buddy who runs empire weekly and for the past several weeks I've lost by ~30points each time! It's getting frustrating! I'll list what I own and if someone could give me some guidance I'd really appreciate it!

1-carno/kroq gar
1-troglodon
1-slann/lord kroak
1-old blood/scar vet on cold one
~50-saurus
~50-skinks
2-stegadons
1-salamandar
2-skink priests
1-skink chief
3-chameleon skinks
10-temple guard

Proxies are always an option (most of his army is bretonian as he only recently chose which army to stick with)

We are both very inexperienced. He rarely takes any magic at all.

I assume the list you posted is actually what you got an not an army list?

Start simple:

Slann on High Magic
Scar-vet on Cold One
24 Temple Guard (use Saurus)
24 Saurus
5 x 10 units of skinks as skirmishers
1 unit of 6 chameleons (for warmachines)
2 ancient stegadons
1 Salamander

A unit of Terradons or Ripperdactyls for additional warmachine hunting might be worth proxying as well.

You can put the Scar Vet in the unit of Saurus and have him launch out of the unit as needed. Depending on points, you may be able to make him an Oldblood.

Deploy two big blocks centrally, with Stegadons to the sides of the blocks, and skinks either in front or out wide, depending on terrain.

Play the same list several times in a row and really get the feel for it. Then make slight changes. At some point it'll click and then you'll be kicking ass and taking names
