8th Ed. 1150 pt. army list VS Skaven.

Hi guys, I would welcome advice if you'd be prepared to give it to me. Thank you.
(On a side note when I try to write skaven my phone corrects it to "slackers")

HEROES
skink priest, level 2, dispell scroll, cloak of feathers.
skink chief, enchanted shield, sword of the hornet, venom of the firefly frog.

CORE
16x Saurus, full command.
12x skink skirmishers, brave.
2x jungle swarms.

SPECIAL
Stegadon.

RARE
Ancient Stegadon.

That comes to a total of 1149 pts, just about enough.
Again, advice is welcome.
 
The champion and the two extra guys on the skink unit are not a good use of points.
I seriously question the value of 16 Saurus against anyone, but especially against Skaven who will outnumber them by a lot. Either take more or don't take them.
Jungle Swarms are pretty terrible.

I have had lizard men for about 6 years but became addicted to 40k!
This is why I only have 16 saurus. There is still a chance however that I will have 16 more before the battle,
So if I do get them I will probably shave of the chieftain, brave, and swarms.
At the moment this is all I have. Well, that and TG. Oh, and a sallie. The only reason I'm not using the sallie is because neither of the players have templates, but I will add it if I find mine.
 
Ok, so I've changed my army list. I think this will do better!

HEROES
Scar-vet, light armour, great weapon, venom of the firefly frog, dawnstone, dragonhelm.
Skink priest, lvl 2, dispel scroll.

CORE
Saurus Warriors x15, spears, full command.
Skink skirmishers x14, brave.
Jungle swarm x1.

SPECIAL
Stegadon.

RARE
Ancient stegadon.

TOTAL: 1159 pts.
 
with so few saurus, I'd try to set them up as a flanker and used the steg to hit things head out. disrupting the huge mass of clanrats and slaves and winning combat res is going to be critical.

watch out for the warp lightning cannon.
 
The skink priest build is illegal (two arcane items) and the earlier build with sword of the hornet and VoFFF would not work since VoFFF only works with mundane weapons. That aside, I am not sure what models you have available but I would recommend the following, if available:

1) sallies - best thing in the arsenal for thinning out the massed ranks of skaven slaves and clanrats. They are also very fast and can go into the rear area to take out warp cannons, jezzails, etc. in combat.

2) saurus warriors - drop the jungle swarm and beef up this unit as much as possible. While I personally prefer hand wpn & shield since it is cheaper and gives a ward save, you might not have much option if all your saurus are currently built with spears. A fast and easy option is to use a unit filler if you don't have the models (say ~ 100mm x 75mm to represent 12 saurus).

3) Scar vet build - VoFFF is far more effective with a mundane special weapon such as xhw, halberd or GW. Perhaps GW, dragonhelm & dawnstone.

Thanks for the advice! So should I ditch the anc. Steggy for a sallie?
Both the terror and the panic causing breath weapon look delicious!
I will edit the scar-vet, and will get a Filler or more Saurus for next week!
Shame about priest though. Will ditch diadem of power as it was a tasty extra added on!

Where's your fancy jezzails now? (Thankfully I have been saved an auto ass whipping!)

Oh and yes the plan for my puny group of saurus is flanking duty.

the problem with skaven and Ld is that until they get down in numbers, SIN will keep them at Ld9 if they have a hero general, or 10 if they have a lord. they won't likely break from combat or fail fear tests. even running from the casualties made by sallies is a tough feat. However, 20mm bases get covered a lot by the flame template. a well aimed shot, wounding on 4s with no -3 armor save will be the most effect way of thinking big blocks.

the steggy and crew should make their armor saves, and the steggy should have almost guaranteed wounds. rats will be steadfast for a long while though and their artillery can fire into slaves. so if they tie up steg, they can still shoot him to death. big model like that I think is a liability. salamanders are solid for any list, but even more against T3 core.

Terradons are good war machine hunters, get stomps, vanguard, and have +1S on the turn they charge. plus dropping d3 S4 rocks on squishy rats. may be something to look at.

I don't think spears are the way to go. if he is 5 wide, you can run 7 wide and maximize attacks. thats 14 models in the front 2 ranks and the spears would be not utilized. they are better in bigger blocks. plus, you may need the parry save. i'd toss an extra saurus model in there and ditch the spears. champion is a waste of points as well unless u need someone to soak up a challenge.

swarms are terrible. dump them and get 2 units of 10 skink skirmishers. I like the javelin upgrade for march and shoot without penalty, and a 6/6 armor/ward save in CC, which will actually see use against S3 rats. but 2 units of blowpipers doubletapping is great too. just can't move and be at long range.

Well that's all good, as I love blowpipe skinks! I will add a bunch more to the list and beef up the saurus with the points given from the sallie/ancient steggy swap.

Did I mention I got a filler for the Sauria and skinks?
Just some empty bases to carry out the will of the old ones!
 
I had the game today, and guess what, I won!
I got lucky and destroyed 40 clan rats with my saurus/scar vet unit.
My stegadon killed his slaves after just a turn (thanks to a massive bunch of kills from my sallie)
And overran into the rat ogres.
My scar vet killed his general in a challenge, and his warlord cost about 50 pts more.

Thanks for the advice guys, a bigger block of Saurus instead of a ancient steggy was a good choice.
They dominated.

Well now I have cold one cavalry... Oh, and 3 scarvets (2 are cowboys), that I have not yet made a list for. I think 2 cowboys would have turned my win into a massacre. I also have a new bastilodon and an extra 16 saurus.
