7th Ed. 1000 points - my first game ever

So I'm brand new to the hobby, and am playing my first game next week (eep). I am playing against one of my best friends (a perk is that we can cut out pieces of paper for units we don't yet have ), but I'm stressing a bit over what army I should roll, especially seeing as theres tons of combinations and I don't really even know how to play yet.. lol. I'll be playing against Warriors of Chaos.

List;

L2 Skink priest - EoTG, Drums of Xahutec, Plaque of Tepok (435)

18x Saurus, full command, spears (246)
10x Skink skirmishers (50)
10x Skink skirmishers (50)

3x Terradon riders (90)

1x Salamander w/ 1 extra Skink (80)

Thats 951 points right there. I'm kinda stuck as to where the last 49 points go, or whether I should reform my list altogether. Beef up the Saurus block maybe? Also, is it worth having the Champion in the Saurus? From what I've read they're only really useful for protecting characters.

Advice/constructive criticism would be appreciated

I think if you drop the musician from the saurus, you would have just enough for a basic unit of ranked skinks...
(our cheapest unit) they would be usefull for screening the Saurus block.

if its your 1st game you really have no buisness posting army lists here. jus ttry every crazy ideea you have for a few games so you get an ideea of how units work. most of the infaromation we pass on to you, you will not understand (and that is not an instult, its just human). learn what the units do and the you can ask other people how to build a list
nothing ventured, nothing gained means that you have to lose a few battles so you can win others.

go with whatever feels "right" or "good" and you will see where your mistake lies, if any.

Also, is it worth having the Champion in the Saurus? From what I've read they're only really useful for protecting characters.

Remember if the Warriors of Chaos have a champion/character they will have to challenge you. Since you have spears you probably want as many attacks back as you possibly can get so letting a character overkill onto your champion rather than killing having those extra attacks/wounds hit and kill the normal rank and file saurus could be helpful. (same amount of wounds for the WoC but you have the chance to do more wounds back). In this case I say they are also useful at protecting a unit.

An EoTG is a lot of points in a 1000 point battle. Perhaps a Scar Vet on Cold One with the usual Enchanted Shield, Burning Blade and Light Armor plus a Skink Priest scroll caddy? That is if you want more units as currently almost half your army is made up of characters (well.. character)

My first game back into Warhammer FB was this edition against WoC. It was a 1000 point game. We ended up playing twice that day since it was for fun and I wanted to make sure I had the rules down anyway. We drew the first game and I massacred him the second with this list:

Lvl 2 Skink Priest on EotG, 2 dispel scrolls
10 Saurus with Spears
10 Saurus with Spears
10 Skink Skirmishers
10 Skink Skirmishers
5 Cold One Cavalry

which comes to 995 points.

I was simply playing with what I had and he tailored his list for the second game knowing I was playing the same thing and I still beat him. The Skinks were hilariously deadly. You could tell the second game he was hesitant to get near them but he had to if he wanted to engage me. I found that the Saurus were incredibly resilient and did well even against his harder warriors. Of course the Engine burning him down and getting lucky enough to get Uranon's Thunderbolt were terrific boons as well. The Stegadon itself is quite a capable hammer for flank charges if you pull it off.

Anyway, that was my experience! I wish you luck. Perhaps breaking up the Saurus block and using those extra points to make 2 units of ten could be worth it. I've found that at this points level it seems to be mostly about who can put the most units on the table rather than the quality of the unit.

I appreciate where you're coming from, but still I'd like at least SOME idea of where to start from before I play

Maybe Not. If you are not worried about getting sniped as perhaps the enemy has no/limited ranged attacks (WoC) or you have terrain to hide behind.

The Saurus on the Cold One is very resilient. In a unit of Saurus he helps to fill out the numbers by taking up 2 positions. A unit of 10 Saurus would rank up nicely with him in there as 2 ranks of 6 wide, or a unit of 16 Saurus would rank up as 3 ranks of 6.

A character will get the 'look out sir' so long as it does not have a unit strength of 5 or more.

I could be wrong but I believe that, while he still get's the 'look out sir' role I believe he can be picked out of a unit of infantry since he is not on an infantry base...thus giving him not quite as much protection though your not likely to roll that one and he does get two better armour.

I don't believe so since he wont be in the front row and he is no longer a large target.

Good points, I thought that if you were on a cav base or larger you could be targeted out of a unit but still got your look out sir! unless you were on a monster base. Thanks for the clarification.
