8th Ed. 1000 First Army List - advice would be great

I'm playing against one other player who is as new as I am and another person with alot of experience who is teaching. Opponents will be Ogre, Brit, VC and possibly DoC.

IMO I don't think the maiming shield by itself is a good buy for a scar vet. If you are looking for more attacks, getting the sword of strife (+2 att) for 10 more pts gets you another attack or just get the sword of battle (+1 att) for 10 pts cheaper that does the same thing. Is the Vet your general or is he the BSB? Either way he might need greater protection.

I'm a new player myself, and I've run into the same question about my Scar-Vet in a small (1200 vp) list: do I make him the General or the BSB? Which is better in small games?

When making my list I felt very handicapped because of the limited points you can't get a Slann. I checked the FAQ and built my Vet around one of those builds. I'm honestly only running a priest to learn how to use magic.
