I’m taking Lizardmen to ArcFest (Australia) in May and I’m trying to tune my list.

Giant Blowpipes are near worthless. Stick to giant bow.
 
Were they more useful when poison was instant-wound?
Slightly. But the real problem is multi-shot and BS3. You are already hitting on 4+, multi-shot means a 5+, and with a range of only 18", long range means you are another -1 to hit over 9", so hitting on a 6's there. Skirmishers are also -1 to hit, and then anything like the Banner of Swirling Wind or Cover are also negative modifiers. Really easy to get to a 7+ or even 8+ requirement to hit. And because its cumbersome the stegadon cant event stand and shoot with it.

So in short, its been bad the whole time. Loosing auto wound just robbed it of any tiny modicum of playability
