Agreed. I think they are one of the worst AoS factions in terms of aesthetics. Can't seem to like anything about this new boring bone faction.
I guess that explains TLJ.Ok I guess by now y'all know the drill with me:
When everyone hates something I search for the good things in it.
Sure (and I think I mentioned it before). It is far from my favourite movie, but it does have its qualities and it is often criticized in an exaggerated way, which I think is sad.I guess that explains TLJ.![]()
You can't set me up like that. As an agent of Chaos, you know I have no choice but to take advantage of the opportunity. And now please stop making me derail the thread.![]()
And all this is with a professional paint job. For most people, the model will look substantially worse (as only a small fraction of painters can match or exceed the work produced by the E'avy Metal team)
So, what do I see there?
I see a monstrous machine made of bone, OK.
It smashes or slices up stuff with its fists/kopeshs, depending on configuration, and it most likely bites. I prefer the crocodile head btw.
Why is there a guy in the crotch?
If we take a look from behind/above, and at its name, then we get a hint. This is a harvester. The crotch face/arms gather the bones from the battlefield and store them in the back.
So this is a bit like a corpse cart, just more industrialized. Not a guy with a skewer that gathers the corpses, but a combine harvester that turns enemies into resources in one step.
(I like that part of the paint job, too. The bones in the back are still a bit bloody.)
To be honest I would love to see it animated. The little arms hand the body parts to each other, rip the flesh off and store the bones.
The Ossiarch Bonereapers are doing what their name and lore say, and it is right there in their game mechanic, in this model.
I really like the idea of this model and of this army.
Now, they are not as great as they could be aesthetically. A bit too much greeble, and I also don't like that they used different bone colors there (especially the grey). But I think that a good paint job can make them a lot more bearable.
EDIT: the first thing I would consider is removing the flag on top. I think that would improve the lines of the model.
I don't think that the crotch guy was meant as a joke.I did work this out when looking at this model, but I still ask - why did the little chap doing the harvesting have to be set in the crotch region? Why couldn’t he have been sitting on its back so that the creature picks up the bones with its jaws or claws and throws them up to him to put them in its back? Or perhaps he could have been sitting on the tail and picking up bones the creature leaves behind in its rampage and throwing them up into the basket? Putting him in the crotch region was just an unnecessary attempt to get a bit of humour out in my opinion.
To be honest I do like this faction a lot, despite the backlash of many. All the other Death factions are just boring and unoriginal with their ideas - Legions of Nagash is just Vampire Counts 2.0, Nighthaunt are based on the boring old grim reaper routine and Flesh Eater Courts, while at least having more original and interesting lore in AoS, are still using the Ghoul part of the Vampire Counts models (also I don’t like their obsession with gore). This faction, on the other hand, is something fresh and new, while at the same time using some trusted aesthetics (mostly the End Times undead aesthetics but also a bit of Tomb Kings in terms of the hieroglyphics and the troop roster).
I do agree there is some weird stuff, but as an experienced kitbasher, I’m sure it is possible to work out ways to get rid of the weirdest stuff (as @Aginor says the heads on the infantry and monstrous infantry can be easily swapped out, and the bloke in the crotch of the creature can be cut off mostly and replaced with another model sitting in a less weird region like on the tail). Also having a different paint scheme goes a long way to making them look like something new (e.g. painting the all like Tomb Kings animated constructs or something).

I don't think that the crotch guy was meant as a joke.

It is just down there so it can look at the ground and pick up stuff while the main head and fists mow down the enemies.
Mow down.... go low to pick up.... yeah. Pretty much this:
