Looks like.. (?) ..it could. It already did. No, it got bad yesterday. It went CAT5, top of the scale, and proceeded to clobber the Bahamians.

There are two possibilities for what it does next:
1) Eye follows the coastline (almost like the East coast was originally carved by a hurricane) but never goes ashore.

2) It sits offshore, for so long it misses the low pressure trough that wants to pull it off North, then it crawls onshore smack in the middle of Florida.

Looks like it has backed down from CAT5 ! (Earlier this morning it was doing max sustained winds of 165 mph, but it is now down to 155, one mph below a 5; The max possible CAT4.)
