I know that Games Workshop and many other companies sell containers with foam and such for storage and transport of miniatures. However, most of my armies contain a large number of figures - I like the big games :)

Therefore it's a serious pain to have each individual figure in a little compartment, and have to take them all out and place them on movement trays, etc. Of course, I can't just dump them all in a shoebox as I am concerned about the paint.

Is there a better way? Some happy medium?

These cases I find to be much better. Not only does the increased space allow your to fit 1-2 armies in ones case (along with pouches perfect for dice and army books), but the foam comes uncut so that you can make sections that can fit an entire regiment snugly in its movement tray. The foam pieces are semi-adhesive so you can just pull out the suitable sections by hand rather than going at it with a hack-saw ;) .
