Hey all, I'm cageblood, I'm new here. I introduced myself over here.
    http://lustria-online.com/threads/hello-hi-howdy.21164/

On the advice of @Crowsfoot I'll be using this as a paint blog to gain that sweet sweet validation I seek.

Being a new painter I am always actively seeking criticism and feedback, so if you think you see any mistakes or missteps don't hesitate to say so. Thanks for looking at my stuff.

So to start, I am being SUPER indecisive about the paint scheme for my army, and until I find one I'm happy with I'm working on a piece of scenery. I bought a fossil triceratops kit so I could use the smaller bones as a bit of flavor for the basing of larger units, but I had an idea to just use the skull on its own as a piece of scenery due to its size. I'm debating taking extra ornamental bits I have lying around and turning it into a kind of enchanted skull shrine or keeping it just as a big ol' vanilla skull lying on the battlefield. Progress pics so far...

    1) Out of the box toy fossil skull.
    2) White primer.
    3) Apple Barrel beige basecoat. No way am I using GW paints on something this big. Skink for scale. tri skull before.jpg tri skull stage 1.jpg tri skull stage 2.2.jpg

Are you going to age the skull next?

After that I did a wash of agrax earthshade and then drybrushed. I used a mostly white apple barrel with a touch of beige. I am not a very good drybrusher so I would welcome feedback if people think I did too much / not enough / just did it badly. If I leave it as a basic skull scenery piece I'm basically done but I think I'm probably gonna deck it out with bling and warpaint. tri skull stage 3.jpg

Hey crowsfoot! Yes I already did. Sorry for double post I just wanted to give more context to the wash / drybrush picture. :)

That looks good but I think you should maybe try and pick out some detail like the cracks etc, a brown wash/shade applied in the cracks will do it.

I agree with what @Crowsfoot said. Some wash applied directly into the cracks in the skull will be useful... aside from that the skull looks really great! Are you planning to put it on a base or will you use it as it is?

You could add some moss in some spots, if the skull was lying in the jungle. You could add some snakes in the sockets or some roots entangling it.

I will be basing it yeah. I have one of those old square large bases. On that note, does anyone have any particularly good tutorials on basing in a jungle style they'd recommend? I've been looking around, but it never hurts to see other perspectives.

Yep, am gonna re-drybrush a bit of white for the stuff I've smudged off after I'm done painting everything else, then a bit of dirt and moss once I know more what its surroundings on the base are like. I agree its a bit too clean to be out in the midst of a jungle.

Also I did another application of wash in the deepest recesses. You guys were right, definitely helped a lot. tri skull stage 4.jpg

Tonight's progress. I started on blinging out the skull. Glued and basecoated the gold jewelry. Also started on the green glowing eyes effect to make this skull look enchanted. Lastly applied a pattern of warpaint for decoration and to make it look a bit more "tribal." I only placed slightly thicker than usual basecoats on and am actually pretty happy with the effect as it looks a lot more unrefined than it would if I did a wash and highlight to the painted areas. It looks like a basic application of paint and I think "in-universe" that's what it should look like, but I'd welcome any thoughts or criticisms or if people think I went too far with it.

Up next. finish the glowing eyes, wash and highlight the gold. Begin basing. tri skull stage 5.1.jpg tri skull stage 5.2.jpg tri skull stage 5.3.jpg

    Welxome.

That first skink is rough. I think he needs a bath and repaint.

The toy Triceratops skull conversion is inspiring. I I would put him on an oval base and use him as a Terrain feature

Oh I absolutely agree he is not up to snuff if I were to use him in a game, but I’m keeping him around as an example of how bad I was when I started, so no stripping for him. I can spare one skink for a keepsake I think. :)

Thanks for the kind words on the skull. It is definitely getting put on a base, if at least because it likes to tip backwards when not fasted down.

So I totally didn't see the part where you said he was a Keepsake for a reminder of painting. I apologize for my presumption

Today's progress! Finished off the glowing eye effects and gave a wash to all the gold, touched up warpaint and white drybrushing in a few spots. Skull itself is basically done save a little bit of dirt/moss drybrushing once it is based. Working on the base as well, went out and got the basing materials and experimenting to get an effect I like, so after today might be a few days before I see any progress on that, but hope to have the entire scenery piece done by Tuesday. I think the result will be good but it does take some time for stuff to dry. tri skull stage 6.1.jpg tri skull stage 6.2.jpg

So because I have to sit around waiting for basing stuff to dry I started on a few other things. Firstly I started drybrushing my bastilodon's shell. Thanks to Nefertem I found a great tutorial for a reddish orange color but I swapped the colors to do a greenish white. Really liking the shell, now need to find a color for the underside. Was originally going to paint it an off-yellow to do a Bowser-esque theme but I think I'm going in a different direction.

Lastly I've been experimenting with color schemes on my skinks to find something I like for my army in general. I know the technique on these two are rough I was mostly seeing what colors I could get to look good together. These were the two from today that resulted in something I liked.

The first one I've dubbed "pink and pale" I think I'm going to use for my carnosaur. For some reason I have it fixed that I want to use bright pink on my carnosaur and this is the best use of it I've found yet, and with a larger model I can pull off this effect better.

The second one I was inspired by red-bellied piranhas and I think I might do this for all my battleline units, but would probably add another small area of even lighter blue drybrush.

If I do go forward with these two then I would only need to find something for my cold ones and hero units, if I want them in unique colors. Will ruminate and experiment further...

p.s. if i'm breaking forum etiquette by multi posting so much or doing anything else let me know please, I would hate to think I'm being rude in some way.

I like both schemes, your not doing anything wrong multi posting, just don't spam out posts for no reason. ;)
