Hi all. Getting back into playing 8th warhammer soon with a friend who will have a 1000 pt nigh goblin army. What do you think would be a good list and how would you use it? At the moment I own: 23 saurus warriors 10 skinks with blowpipes 11 skinks with javelins (usually bunker for tetto) 5 Chameleon skinks 2 salamanders 1 stegadon with giant bow 3 ripperdactyls Tettoecko Scar veteran /Oldblood Scar vet/Oldblood on cold one 2 skink priests 1 skink chief with standard. Happy to buy more models but don't want to spend too much money to be honest. Any ideas/lists would be greatly appreciated.
These are your better units against goblins. The salamanders in particular will be devastating. you may need the chameleons for taking out doom divers and fanatics. dropping a comet with Tettoecko right in the middle of their battle line would be devastating. Saurus are just superior to his core take them with spears if you can. you will probably have to fill the rest of your core with skinks, I usually prefer blowpipes. and old bloods are always a good choice, I would tool them for maximum attacks.
I actually have no experience playing at such low point levels. All my games, save for one, have been at 3000pts. That said, @n810 's selections seem solid. I think that the Scar Vet Cowboy will especially be a handful for your opponent to deal with. The only thing I would disagree with is running Saurus with spears. At such a low points game you probably won't be able to field sufficient numbers to make use of them for long. I like the survivablity of sword and board. With our poor WS, a couple of extra spear attacks are unlikely to outweigh the benefit of having a parry.... at least in my mind.
Against chaos warriors, yea... but these are low WS low armor Goblins, So I would prefer more attacks over the 1 in 6 shot parry save. rule of thumb: against ST4 and up Sword and board are better. against ST3 and under spears are better.
That's a fair point. The thing I don't like about spears though, is that they are only effective so long as you have that 3rd rank. In a 1000pts game, unit sizes will be fairly small, so as you take casualties, your spears can quickly become worthless.
I'd run them 6 wide and 4 deep with a scar-vet or old blood in the front rank and full command. that way if you loose to many you can reform to 5 wide. Also 6 wide is more attacks. Very effective if they get a spell buff from the skink priest.
I can see that being a pretty resilient unit in the context of 1000 pts game! It also fills up your core nicely.
