I understand that this may arguably come under 'painting', but it is Salamander-specific so I thought I'd put it in here.

I was wondering whether anyone had specifically painted a 'Salamanders' army, rather than just repurposing already-painted Lizardmen models they had? If so, would you be able to post pictures?

The only colour-related information mentioned in Unchartered Empires is that "as [salamanders (the species)] grow older, their skin toughens and starts to grey, armoured scales deepening their red hues." This is borne out by Mantic's official miniatures pictures in which Salamanders have leathery, grey skin. These colours are a completely different starting palette to the turquoise / blue hues of Lizardmen so I was wondering what people's take on it was!

I've got some ideas myself, but would appreciate others' musings before I get started on Hrath Flamespitter and 3 boxes of Salamanders!

I've just used my GW models as they were all ready painted.

I don't think it really matters what colour you paint them as the background info does say there are different tribes so colours could vary.

If I was to get some Salamanders I would do a paint scheme of purples, reds, orange and grey. Red skin tones with purple and orange highlights for "Primes". Purple and grey to represent "Ancients"

I have a Mantic and AOW Dwarf army I have just assembled and they are next on the painting calendar.

Different tribes? I've read the Salamanders info in Unchartered Empires a number of times but couldn't find a mention. Is there more information elsewhere? From what I've read there were different clans but these were unified by Kthorlaq before the Age of Ice.

Clans is what I meant sorry, don't forget that some try to prove themselves with the "ordeal of fire" so that could be a nice colour scheme.

My own take on color scheme is to just use what you have. Remember that blue flames exist in nature, so your blue lizardmen are still flame-colored. I plan on painting my new GW lizardmen in blue with orange scales and use them for both. If I was doing Mantic Salamanders, I'd probably do a more red-orange scheme.

So, I decided to be utterly boring and go for (nearly) the standard colour scheme! As these are the first models I have painted in 14 years (and I've mentioned elsewhere that 'painted' is a very loose description) I thought I'd learn to paint before experimenting. Righty was the first I did, then I changed a few things and lefty is the second!

My Lizardmen had always been painted black with silver scales, so now I'll paint my new Salamander models to look like obsidian, with the same silver scale additions.

I use GW Sauruses (I find Mantic's Salamanders too wolf-like) and paint them in fiery colors. I use Vallejo bright orange as base, wash with a black wash and dry-brush with bright orange over it. Then I add two or three layers of a mix of bright orange and flat yellow (more yellow for each layer) on the scales.

Ugh - army still coming on slowly! Ghekkotah I thought I'd go for orange, with the same colour scales as my Salamanders as they are related species and I've gone for traditional green for the Kaisenors. Still not finished, and a long way to go yet!

Thank you! My concern is that it's going so slowly I'm going to struggle to get them all finished to a standard I'm happy with my the tournament in October. I work away from home so I've found a way to bring some units with me each week to speed up the process! :D

Hi Banshee! The red and blue ones are Mantic Salamanders, the orange ones are Games Workshop Skinks and the green ones are Games Workshop Cold Ones mounts from the Saurus Cavalry box.

I didn't understand your second sentence so can't respond to that one :D

The upper skin and scales are Castellan Green, then Biel-Tan Green shade (which creates the jade tone rather than true green), then Loren Forest and Straken Green to highlight. It's the same as on the GW colour chart except for the change of shade.
